The Army of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598) was the second of the three great unifiers of Japan. Born the son of a poor foot soldier, Hideyoshi made a living as a peddler. He gradually seized opportunities as they came and rose through the ranks to serve under the warlord Oda Nobunaga, who had nearly succeeded in unifying the nation after toppling the Muromachi government in Kyoto.

Fighting in numerous battles around Japan, Hideyoshi emerged as one of Nobunaga's leading generals and after Nobunaga's death in 1582, took charge of his forces. In 1591 after many more conflicts, burying his rivals one by one, he eventually achieved his goal of national unity.

Hideyoshi is also well known for the two reckless attempts to invade Korea during his rule and for his nickname Saru (monkey), due to his sunken features and dark skin which Nobunaga (rarely known for his tact) likened to that of a monkey!

He died of natural causes in 1598 leaving Japan open to the ambitions of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
